2023 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival

Australian Turf Club ATC Autumn Racing Carnival

I have just launched my new Autumn Winter 2023 collection in time for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival which kicks off on Saturday 11 March. Check it out here.

The carnival’s main fashion events are:

  • Chandon Ladies Day – 11 March: Wear a touch of pink for the Pink Fashion lunch and Fashion Stakes competition.
  • Longines Golden Slipper Day – 18 March: Wear a touch of gold for the Longines Prize for Elegance fashion competition.
  • The Star Championships Day 1 – 1 April: Wear traditional black and white for the Sydney Confidential Fashion Stakes.
  • The Championships Day 2, Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes – 8 April: Inspired by blue for the Longines Prize for Elegance fashion competition.

Here are my tips for dressing for the occasion and keeping yourself warm!

Fabrics

With the change in season to cooler temperatures clothing go for heavier fabrics to keep warm. Examples include wool, tweed, plaids, leather, lace, faux fur trims.

Colours

Autumn’s golden tones like tan, brown, copper, mustard, oranges, and olive are always in style. Rich jewel tones like navy, plums, maroon, deep purple, emerald green are also perfect choices for the Autumn and Winter racing season. Classic black, white and grey are always elegant and never miss the mark. Traditional black and white is a must for The Championships Day 1 – Derby Day.

Shapes and silhouettes

Go for more tailored and structured looks. A sharp suit or a midi length dress or skirt are great options. Sleeves are great to keep warm, play around with different shapes like a full sleeve, draped sleeve, ruffles, bell sleeve etc. A jacket or coat in during the autumn and winter racing season is also just as important at the dress or skirt and blouse combo you wear underneath it.

Accessories

Statement earrings and a fabulous clutch (in winter fabrics) can give your outfit that special something. Avoid open toe heels and opt for an enclosed shoe in patent leather or suede. Gloves are a great addition in the colder months. Go for a smoky eye make-up or a bold lip such as reds, burgundy, maroons – never both at the same time.

Millinery

In the words of Philip Treacy “a hat is an extension of the outfit, an accessory that can be used to make a statement or simple add a touch of elegance”. Wearing a hat or headpiece will complete your outfit. Remember, headwear should complement your outfit and pick up the colours of your clothing and accessories.

Make sure you stick to autumn and winter millinery materials which include: fur or wool felts, fur, leather, suede, velvet, silk, tweed/plaids, Guipure lace, feathers, velour ribbons, veiling, chenille.
